PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS

The Dr. Oswaldo Loor Foundation, with its social programs and projects, especially benefits people with visual impairment and / or very low economic resources. In order to maintain them, it requires the support of people or institutions that help to fulfill its mission.

OUR PROGRAMS

COMUNITARIO PROGRAM

With this program the Foundation provides free basic eye care in urban areas, sites and rural communities of the province that do not have access to eye care.

BAJA VISION PROGRAM

This program serves people who have suffered a significant loss of vision that cannot be corrected with glasses, treatment or surgery. Its objective is to help people with low vision to use their remaining vision in their daily life activities.

LUZ PROGRAM

With the Luz Program, attention is provided to people with no vision or with a vision lower than 20/400 to enable and/or rehabilitate them, with the purpose of achieving their social, educational and labor inclusion.

RESURGIR PROJECT

In April 2016 a strong earthquake hit the province of Manabí. Several homes of
visually impaired people, beneficiaries of the Luz Program, were seriously affected. In consideration of the need for these people and their families to have a safe place to live.

ESCOLAR PROGRAM

This Program, which for the moment is suspended, had the purpose of correcting refractive defects in schoolchildren, for which it was necessary to perform the visual acuity test to all students in the province of Manabí in their own schools, provide optometric care to those who were detected with a visual
problem and then deliver glasses with their respective measures to those who
needed them.

We want to thank all those who, with their generosity, have allowed us to continue helping so many people who seek our services and support on a daily basis.

SOLIDARITY STORIES

KEVIN MERO

Kevin Junior Mero Mero is a 26-year-old young man with visual impairment who lives in the Las Gilces community, in the Crucita parish of Portoviejo Canton. At the age of seven, Kevin began his rehabilitation process through the Luz Program of the Dr. Oswaldo Loor Moreira Foundation. He received ongoing support from Community Promoters, who visited him at home and at the Rodolfo Chávez Rendón Public Educational Institution, where he completed his early years of academic education.

During his training, Kevin learned Braille reading and writing techniques, how to use the abacus for mathematics, orientation and mobility skills, and activities of daily living.

From an early age, Kevin was drawn to music and singing. His grandfather used to take him to sing at the beach, which allowed him to develop his artistic talents.

In 2016, Kevin won first place in the event “Los Barrios Cantan en Diciembre” (“The Neighborhoods Sing in December”) and received a scholarship to study at San Gregorio University, where he graduated with a degree in Communications. Today, Kevin Mero, now a communications professional, is the manager of the digital radio station “La Voz de Crucita” (“The Voice of Crucita”) and has become an example of how dedication and hard work can lead to great achievements.
